Green Cove Springs’ history is a richly woven tapestry. The area that would later become the city it is today was first developed by George I.F. Clarke in 1816. In the late 1880s, visitors from all over flocked to the city to experience for themselves the medicinal qualities of the natural spring and the area’s tropical climate, resulting in a boom of prosperity for Green Cove Springs. Since 1871, it’s been the County Seat of Clay County.
The freshwater spring from which the city derives part of its name has a circular concrete bowl built around its mouth. Water from the spring gets diverted into a large public swimming pool for residents to enjoy. Because the water cycles flow constantly from the spring to the St. Johns River, no chlorine is put into the pool.
Green Cove Springs is also home to several local events that residents love. Check out the annual Memorial Day RiverFest, sponsored by the city to honor military service personnel and veterans, and you’ll find arts and crafts, music, and a parade of flags. The annual Soul Food Festival is also a Green Cove Springs treat, offering residents incredible food, an exciting dance competition, and a sweet potato pie contest.
There’s still plenty to do when there aren’t public events being held. History buffs will love The Military Museum of North Florida, while golfers can get in a few holes at local courses like the Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club.
